Petaluma man arrested on suspicion of backpack and computer theft

PETALUMA, Calif .– A man described as a passenger was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing a backpack and computer from the Petaluma high school gymnasium, police said.

Tyler J. Herrod, 27, was arrested at Putnam Plaza in downtown Petaluma around 5:30 p.m. Friday on suspicion of robbery and breach of probation. He was taken to the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Center, police said.

The case began around 10:45 a.m. on Friday, when a suspect stole a backpack and computer from the gym and also entered the women’s room, police said. By the time officers arrived on campus, the suspect was gone.

Officers reviewed the campus surveillance video and distributed photos of the suspect to other police officers, and an officer saw a man resembling the suspect in the video at Putnam Plaza around 5:30 p.m. stolen, and he allegedly confessed to the theft.
