MassMEDIC announces the winners of the IGNITE 2021 accelerator

BOSTON, December 20, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – MassMEDIC, the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council, today announced the successful conclusion of its 2021 Medical Technology Accelerator program focused on identifying and training the medical device leaders of the future, MedTech IGNITE. This year’s IGNITE cohort included 12 startups developing wearable devices, diagnostics, and surgical devices in neurology, women’s health, oncology, infectious diseases, diabetes, and cardiology.

The IGNITE 2021 cohort participated in virtual master classes led by medical technology executives with expertise in law, regulation, manufacturing, HR and financing. Additionally, they attended virtual networking events and fireside chats with medical tech industry luminaries while honing their arguments with input from VCs and experienced mentors.

This year’s cash prize winners were selected by their peers. Each cohort founder presented his business pitch to the cohort and was rated on three criteria: product fit for the market, business plan and team strength. The winners are:

  • Third place (tie): Phiex Technologies (founded by CL Tian) and OxiWear (founded by Shavini Fernando) each received $ 1,250
  • The second place: AOA Dx (co-founded by Oriana Papin-Zoghbi, Anna Jeter and Alex Fischer) received $ 7,500
  • First place: Therapeutic Encora (co-founded by Trang Luu, Daniel Carballo, Kyle Pina and Allison Davanzo) received $ 20,000

“We are extremely proud of the IGNITE 2021 Cohort. IGNITE is designed to identify, nurture and support medical technology entrepreneurs around the world. We made a concerted effort this year to expand the footprint and the 2021 cohort had the highest representation of female founders at 59% while also featuring a fantastic group of teams from around the world. Although the program has been virtually executed again this year, that hasn’t stopped the founders from developing strong bonds and inspiring each other and making great strides in moving their businesses forward, ”said Rachel Robinson, Vice-President of MassMEDIC.

“The initial financial investment made three years ago in this program by the Mass Life Sciences Center is now generating an excellent return on investment. and the growth of the Commonwealth and New England medtech ecosystem as a whole, and IGNITE plays an important role in connecting all stakeholders with the medtech leaders of the future. “

“The Life Sciences Center is a proud partner of the MassMEDIC Ignite program to support promising medical technology startups and foster diversity and gender parity in the industry,” said Kenn Turner, President and CEO of Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. “I want to congratulate this year’s cohort who represent a dynamic group of CEOs and founders who demonstrate the best of our region’s thriving ecosystem.”

IGNITE is creating a pipeline of medtech startups that will help fuel the future of the Commonwealth’s medtech ecosystem by establishing offices, recruiting teams, partnering with strategies and engaging professional service companies. The program has attracted startups from the Commonwealth, the United States and around the world, with a focus on inclusion and diversity among its founders, 43% of whom are founders in the last three cohorts.
