Computer Graphics Pioneer Dr Norm Badler Joins Cesium to Lead Metaverse Research

Professor Badler arrives in Cesium after 5 decades of teaching at University of Pennsylvania, where he was the Rachleff family professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science.

Building the open metaverse is an ongoing collaborative effort that spans many industries and fields of study. Working alongside metaverse giants like Epic Games and NVIDIA, Cesium’s platform enables the streaming of massive amounts of 3D data (a staple of the metaverse) and provides a bridge to bring the collected real-world 3D data to from sensors such as satellites and drones into digital worlds.

Working at the intersection of mathematics, geometry, AI, interactive systems, computer vision, and art, Professor Badler is widely recognized as the pioneer of computer graphics research at Penn. He was the founding director of the University’s Digital Visualization Center (the ViDi Center), the Computer Graphics Center and the Human Modeling and Simulation Center. He is also credited with creating the undergraduate program in Digital Media Design and (along with Prof. Stephen lane) Computer Graphics and Game Technology Masters program, both in Penn Engineering.

Professor Badler produced the Jack simulation software and interactive ergonomic human models in the mid-1990s, a solution that still exists today and is marketed by Siemens. In 2021, he was named to the Academy class of ACM SIGGRAPH, considered one of the highest accolades in the field of computer graphics.
